“OLEDB provider for Green Plum when used in SSIS 2008 fetches a column with datatype varying character as UNICODE. Is this the expected behaviour?

Version of Provider is 1.3.0.2196”

Yes, it is default behavior - provider convert utf8 into Unicode wide character string. Does that cause any issue?

When we are fetching data from Greenplum database using this driver to SQL Server, we have to use Data Conversion transformation to convert from unicode string to non unicode string ideally which is not advisable to use.
